Website Customization: What can we do?

by Kim and Charles Petty

Nowadays, in this trendy world, people get very uptight when they do not look entirely presentable. This would also be the case in web designing.

Every individual would definitely want their website to look good, if not, to the best they can. Here are a few things we could look out for when wanting to create a professional looking webpage.

Color Schemes and Themes.

When designing, always choose matching colors. An example of a matching color would be to have a dark background, with visible words and designs. With the dark theme, try not to mix too many bright colors into the design. What we should NEVER do, is to mix two very different colors, such as purple and yellow. Now, of course, it would depend on the purpose of the website, but those two colors are too striking for one who wants it to look more professional.

Themes must always suit the company or rather, the organization / etc. If the website was made to cater for a food company, it would be wise to stick to that particular category, rather than to revert to a different theme, such as machinery.

Fonts should be used in regard to the formality of the website. A simple sans-serif font would suffice in most cases. Exceptional cases such as design and art groups might want to use fanciful designs and fonts. Of course, that’s only if you know what you’re doing.

Finally, we must always try to think of our visitors, see the way they see. The resolutions and file sizes of the pictures must not be too large in terms of size. This is to allow maximum compatibility and cater our visitor’s needs.

So, planning is something we should always do, before attempting something.

Building Your Mailing List with Downloads

by Kim and Charles Petty

A mailing list is the lifeblood of your online business. The old adage “the money is in the list” cannot be true enough — if you had a targeted list of prospects to contact each time you have a new product, you will be able to save a lot of effort by marketing it to your existing list of targeted prospects.

You can actually build up a targeted list of prospects that are interested in your products by offering a relevant download on your website. For example, let’s take a look at a very good example — apple.com. When you download the free iTunes and Quicktime software from their site, they will ask you to fill in an optional name and email form so that they can send you offers on songs that you can purchase via — guess where — iTunes!

In reality, you do not need to offer such a “heavyweight” download such as a full-feature software like iTunes. You can attract prospects equally well with some quality freebies such as a simple report, a free wallpaper, and so on. The important thing is that your download offers enough value for the prospect to be willing to give away his/her own email address to get it.

You can attract prospects equally well with some quality freebies such as a simple report, a free wallpaper, and so on. The important thing is that your download offers enough value for the prospect to be willing to give away his/her own email address to get it.

First of all, you must place your download form prominently on your website. Preferably, dedicate a page to it and link to that page from every other page of your website. That way, there is no way your visitors cannot find the download page, and when they do, you’ll get some of them converted into your prospects!

Also, you have to put a little effort into promoting your download. Explain and elaborate on the values of the download, and why your visitors should download it. You might think why would anyone want to pass on a freebie, but most of your visitors would be too lazy to take the effort to download it because most of their downloads just sit on the harddisk collecting virtual dust. It is hence important to show your visitors why they should download your freebie.

Beware of Affiliate Spamming!

by Kim and Charles Petty

The modern variation of the practice of paying finder’s-fees for the introduction of new clients to a business is a popular method of promoting Internet businesses called affiliate marketing. An affiliate marketer is paid for every visitor, subscriber, or customer provided to an Internet business because of his efforts. The affiliate marketer earns compensation based on a certain value for each visit (Pay per click), registrant (Pay per lead), or a commission for each customer or sale (Pay per Sale), or any combination.

Merchants who are considering adding an affiliate strategy to their online sales channel should research the different technological solutions available to them. As affiliate marketing has matured many affiliate merchants have refined their terms and conditions to prohibit affiliates from spamming. Some types of affiliate management solutions include: standalone software, hosted services, shopping carts with affiliate features, and third party affiliate networks.

Spamdexing or search engine spamming is the practice of deliberately creating web pages which will be indexed by search engines in order to increase the chance of a website or page being placed close to the beginning of search engine results, or to influence the category to which the page is assigned.

Right now there is a lot of debate about the affiliate practice of Spamdexing and many affiliates have converted from sending email spam to creating large volumes of automatically generated web pages each devoted to different niche keywords as a way of search engine optimizing their sites. This is sometimes referred to as spamming the search engine results. Spam is the biggest threat to organic Search Engines whose goal is to provide quality search results for keywords or phrases entered by their users.

Starting a Paid Membership Site

by Kim and Charles Petty

Whatever you call them – member only, membership, subscription, or mentor websites, they all have one thing in common. They are bringing in steady and constant cash flow for their owners, month after month, from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars. The array of the topics of these websites is endless.

Some of these paid membership sites provide mentoring or coaching, others publish useful articles or information in a particular field or product. Still others publish the results of tests and studies or product reviews. Some membership sites provide specialized service or act as a meeting place for people with a common interest and then there are those that provide step-by-step instructions for such things as painting or music.

All these sites have one thing in common: to access the website (or the best information on the site) you have to pay for it! Which begs the questionwhy would anybody pay for information on the Internet?

The answer is simple. People buy information that they could probably find for themselves if they looked long enough and hard enough, because they want to save time or because they think the information will be better or more specialized or because the information just isn’t available to them unless they pay for it.

Just a few short years ago it was almost unheard of to charge for access to a website and almost no one was doing it. Today, however, it is the norm and not the exception. Actually we have Internet dating sites to thank for this huge money making opportunity.

The Internet dating industry began with free membership sites that were mostly populated by nerds, weirdoes and perverts. It was quickly discovered that ordinary people would gladly pay to have access to lists where the posters had been screened even just a little. Now people actually expect to pay for access to valuable information.

The Many Functions Of A Coffee Shop

by Karyn Lewis

A coffee shop is more than just a place to get a drink. If you are seeing it for only that then you are certainly missing out. I have a very busy day most of the time but I tend to enjoy it. I seem to thrive on staying busy and I don’t know what to do with myself if I come across too much free time. Yet it is important to balance out the day with some time to relax and be with your own thoughts.

I discovered this quite by accident once when I wanted to meet with the dad of one of my daughter’s friends. We decided a mutual location like the coffee shop would be the best place for us to get to know each other. He was late and so I had some time to relax and enjoy my drink all alone. I quickly found it to be a place I wanted to go back to several times a week just to have some time to unwind.

For me, hanging out at a coffee shop is a type of therapy for me. I am able to get all of my thoughts in order. It really does help me to prioritize the rest of my day and even to feel refreshed. There are a couple of great coffee shops in my area so I switch where I will go from time to time. It depends on the time of day and what I feel like indulging myself with that day.

Even though I often have to rush from one task to the next during my day, that all stops when I go to the coffee shop. I guess that is why I enjoy it so much. Here I can reflect on my day and spend some time going over my thoughts. I often read magazine articles or a good book too if I am alone. I try not to bring any type of work along with me to the coffee shop or it loses that appeal. Yet I do see many people in there around me doing various types of work.

There are many times when I call a friend and ask them to meet me at the coffee shop. Most of my friends have children so this is our outlet without them to interrupt and distract us. Adult conversation is something I crave since I work from home. These coffee shop meetings really help me to feel like I stay in the loop. My spouse joins me from time to time as well which is a very nice treat for both of us.

You shouldn’t feel bad about just hanging out at a coffee shop after you have ordered your drink. In fact, most coffee shop owners are very happy to see customers doing just that. They want them to feel comfortable enough to come back on a regular basis. You may notice the same people in there all the time too if you frequent the coffee shop several times each week.

There are many other benefits to hanging out at your local coffee shops as well. You can select new drinks to expand your taste buds. You can also get in there and sit down without having to deal with a crowd. You may find that the staff is able to interact with you more during these slower times of the day as well.

Coffee shops are great places to hang out so why not see if it is for you? The atmosphere is going to be different than what you see in the morning or even what you see on TV sitcoms. It is going to allow you a place to think, to relax, and to clear your mind. It is also a great place to socialize and to get away from the daily grind.

Is It Easy to Create our own Website? What is HTML?

by Kim and Charles Petty

Creating a website is not so much a feat, if we compare it to the education of other technical skills. Most people tend to give up and pack their bags as soon as they hear the word “programming” and “technical”. They think it`s too much of a hassle to actually learn a whole computer “language”. HTML, the most basic computer language in building websites, is actually pretty simple to understand, as long as we have the interest in learning new things.

What is HTML?

HTML is the acronym for Hyper Text Markup Language. For learning purposes, just think of it as a language that the computer understands. For example, as humans, we were taught different languages; i.e. HTML as a language, is mostly and specifically used to create a website. The web browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, will then decipher and interpret the code or rather, language(HTML), and display it in a way we can understand it, just like in a basic webpage.

Coding.

Coding the HTML language might be a bit tough for some people, so we can actually purchase programmes, such as Macromedia Dreamweaver, or even Microsoft Frontpage. These programmes are solely created to help individuals in designing professional webpages/websites.

Furthermore, one could also gain access to online web-builders, website builders that are inbuilt and can be directly controlled from the net. There are many different and specific builders online.

Books and magazines contain guides that can help in offering tutorials and ways to put up our own websites. Even online tutorials are credible, as in the modern world, information technology is the best and most cost efficient way in retaining knowledge, especially in this particular field.

So, you could start and build one right away. If you enjoy coding, it might even become a favourable past-time.

The Importance of an Affiliate Program to Membership Sites

by Kim and Charles Petty

Affiliate programs are important to membership sites for a number of good reasons. An affiliate program isn’t really a program. It’s a business arrangement. Affiliate programs are also known as associate programs, associates programs, referral programs and even bounty programs. Most affiliate programs are free to join. Affiliate programs are a way to earn money without producing your own product.

Affiliate programs allow a membership website to generate additional (other than the membership subscription) income by advertising products that are relevant to the site’s theme. For example, let’s say you own a membership website whose theme is golf. You would recommend products that you like yourself like golf books, magazines, videos and golfing gear. When you have an affiliate agreement with the merchants selling those products, they provide you with affiliate links which you paste into your site. Then when members click on those links and buy those products, you earn a commission. Affiliates programs can earn commissions in three ways: per click, per sale and per lead.

The members on a membership website are helped by the affiliate programs as well. They are given easy access to products that they would otherwise have to search the internet to find.

On the other side of the aisle, you can let other companies post your ad on their sites and pay commissions for sales of your product or memberships. Sure, you may give away 10 percent of your profit to an affiliate; but 90 percent of something is better than 100 percent of nothing. You’ll make up in sales quantity what you may lose in percentage of your own net. It’s quite worthwhile in the long run.

Use your e-zine to advertise your affiliate program. Always encourage your newsletter subscribers to forward the newsletter to a friend.

Give Your Employees Goals

by Theo McLanahan

If you’re a business owner you probably realize how important it is to have both personal and career goals. If you don’t have goals, you won’t have the motivation that you need to get to where you want to be.

If you have employees, you need to set goals for them as well. As the person who guides them, you can help them set their own goals and show them how impressive goals can be. As the employees reach their goals, you will find that this will also benefit your business.

Have your employees start with a large goal, such as where they would like to be in 10 years. Encourage them to dream big. Perhaps they would like to own their own business or have a top management position. Next, have them break that down into a 5 year goal. What skills would they like to learn between now and then to help them achieve their long term goal?

From there, your employees can break their goal down into a 3 year goal. They can then shorten that down to a 1 year goal and then they can break that down even further, into a 6 month goal.

See if there are things that you can help your employees with to reach their goals. You may be able to teach basic web design to someone interested in learning how to build a website. They could volunteer to take over the maintenance for your website. From this they could receive valuable experience and help you in the process by giving you some more free time.

Some of your employees may have goals that will go beyond your business. If that happens, stay in contact with the employee. They may become a potential business partner with you in the future.

Since you already know each other’s work styles, you will be able to form an easy partnership. Even though this person may no longer be your employee, you can still benefit from their knowledge and skills.

Not every employee has the desire to have their own business. Some will be just as happy working with you as an employer for many years. By having these employees set goals while working with you, you will keep them energized and motivated.

Your business will flourish as your employees learn new skills and take on more responsibility. They will come together as a group and help you with your business which might not happen if you don’t encourage them to set goals for themselves.

Review of Video Advertising Methods and Formats

by Mark Robertson of ReelSEO.com

For any advertising method to be effective, it has to have a target audience that is consuming the medium with which the advertising is attached to. That being said, advertisers are starting to realize that online video advertising is now an effective method to attract large relevant audiences. Online video consumption has grown tremendously in the past few years and as a result, video sharing and video search companies are poised to reap the benefits of video advertising.

Because of the keen interest of the advertisers towards the online video segment, many video sharing sites have been encouraged to come up with different formats for the placement of video advertisements. The quantum of investment in this segment has fueled innovation of the methods in which video sites are deploying online video monetization and advertising programs. In-stream (pre-roll, mid-roll, post-roll) advertisement formats have been in existence longest and have produced a good share of revenue for online video content producers.

Pre-Roll Format – Ads, typically videos in duration of 15 or 30 seconds are streamed before the video itself plays. This make the advertising incredibly prominent but causes plenty of issues with regard to user friendliness and many studies show this format to be unpopular with users.

Post-roll Video Ads: In post-roll ads, just like pre-roll, a 15 or 30 sec clip is streamed at the end of a video itself. This is usually launched in conjunction with pre-roll as well as often times, the advertiser never gets their ad seen as users most often only watch part of the video.

Mid-Roll Video Ads: Again, like the other in-stream ads, mid-roll streams a short video clip within the video player itself, only with mid-stream, the ad gets played in the middle of the video almost like a normal TV commercial. This seems to be somewhat less offensive to users.

Some of the video sites have started experimenting with different formats like, in-player banners: In-player ads sometimes include relevant text or image advertisements in the space available in video player between the outer margin of the video and the inner margin of the video player.

The buzz in the past year has been with regard to a newer method of video ad delivery that attempts to match relevance by choosing video ads to run with only video that is similar in subject. This is known as contextual video advertising and it can take on a range of different formats with images or text being displayed within a portion of the video window, only being activated when clicked on.

Some of the video sites like to go through the video and include only relevant in-video text advertisements, which match the contents of the video and at the same time it does not disturb the process of video watching by the viewer. Youtube was one of the first sites to adopt this format as a standard and it is called Overlay Video Ads.

These are some of the popular and in-use video formats at the present time. But the work is still going on for the development of the new video formats for the future and no real standard has been set. It will be quite interesting to see what the leaders in this space come up with next.

Broadcast A Radio Show Online

by Theo McLanahan

Internet radio shows are becoming the next big thing, with no signs of this slowing down anytime soon. Having a radio show is an effective way to get new customers, and grow your relationships with current ones. It is also a great way to establish yourself as an expert in your particular field.

You may be under the impression that publishing a radio show online is difficult or requires special equipment. Nothing could be further from the truth. There have been many advancements in technology and you can get started for very little upfront cost. You also have the option of monetizing your radio shows by accepting sponsors or promoting affiliate programs, which will definitely make up for expenses you accrue.

When it comes to recording your internet radio show, you have a few options. Audio Acrobat is a monthly subscription service that makes recording a radio show or podcast very easy. You can use a microphone connected to your computer or you can simply use your telephone. You will be given a special phone number that you can dial into, and this is also a great way to record testimonials and feedback from listeners or quick tips from featured experts.

If you want to interview someone you have several options. First of all, you can use Audio Acrobat. You simply reserve a teleconference line. You can find many free options by performing a Google search. Once you have the teleconference number and pass code, you can give that to the person you are interviewing. You can both dial into the teleconference line, and then you can three-way call your Audio Acrobat number and record the conversation.

You might also opt to use Skype, which is internet based. Skype allows you to talk to other Skype users for free, but there is a fee charged when talking to non-Skype customers. You use a microphone on your computer and log into Skype. The dialer system allows you to contact those with a phone number. Skype will let you record your conversation. Later, you upload that conversation audio file into Audacity.

What is Audacity? It is a free mixing and editing program that lets you combine several audio files into one single file. You can take your commentary, your interviews, your ads, etc, and create one audio file. At this point you use the free Lame Recorder to convert your file into an MP3.

Using Audio Acrobat gives you several advantages. You can upload your MP3 into your account and have it hosted free. You will likely want to create a streaming audio player which you will add to your website. Visitors can then listen to it when they’d like. Or, you can also provide a link which will let your visitor download it to their computer or MP3 player. Audio Acrobat also has iTunes registration, which means your listeners can get automated notification about any new recordings you submit.

If you choose not to go with Audio Acrobat, you can still put your audio files on your site. You will have to make sure with your hosting provider that you have enough space to upload it, as audio files certainly take up a lot of space.

Creating your own internet radio show can be such an easy endeavor. It is worth looking into as it can not only be simple, but also quite profitable.
