Stop Blaming Vending Machines For Overweight People

by Robert Farnham

Is there a connection between heavy individuals and the availability of vending machines? While it is true that they are found everywhere as well as very convenient what people choose to buy out of them is their own choice. How can you hold the industry responsible for the food choices people make? Yet there has been enough of it in the media and even in the courts to make it a concern.

For the most part society seems a vending machine as a way to get what they want fast. It is a substitute when they don’t pack a lunch, have to work late, or they just want something additional to eat or drink. Even when some good choices are offered though that doesn’t mean someone is going to buy them. Certain items tend to move very quickly from vending machines, and most of them aren’t good for those consuming them.

This is because there is a demand for other types of foods. Our society is known for people not always making healthy choices. It is fine to consume junk food in moderation but some people take it to an extreme. They have a soda and a candy bar for breakfast and then again for lunch. This just isn’t providing your body with the vitamins and nutrients that it needs.

Many schools have been removing vending machines though due to complaints by parents and community members. They feel that if the students don’t have access to the junk food in them they will eat a healthy lunch. Yet may students bring junk food and pop to school in their own lunches. Older students go out and get fast food for their lunch hour.

At other schools students can still access vending machines on a limited basis. They can do so before school begins and after the last bell rings. The results of this though is that the owners of the vending machines are losing money. They aren’t making much at all and so they need to make some changes. The school may be willing to end the contract early though with such a change.

This is a prime reason why the owners of such vending machines voluntarily move them. They just aren’t generating enough money from the sales to justify the machine being in place. Since the school is closed for three months out of they year the sales volume needs to be high the rest of the time to compensate for it. When those sales are limited even further it just isn’t cost effective.

Offering some healthier drinks and snacks is one way that vending machine owners are working on the issue as well. They want to make sure people don’t feel pushed into buying sugary snacks or drinks. They will if there is nothing else that fits into their diet so they don’t want to back them into such a corner.

It is time to stop blaming vending machines for people making unhealthy diet choices though. The fact that these vending machines are out there doesn’t mean people have to access what is inside of them. More education on the value of a healthy diet as well as exercise is needed. Parents also need to take an active role in the lives of their children. Setting a good example by making healthy choices yourself will encourage them to do so as well.
